Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)
Last updated: June 2026
S Mobile Wireless participates in the federal Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program. On WEA-capable devices, you may receive alerts authorized by emergency officials.
Types of alerts
- Presidential Alerts (cannot be disabled).
- Imminent threats to life or safety (severe weather, evacuation, AMBER alerts).
- Public safety messages.
- Test messages.
Coverage and delivery
WEA messages are broadcast to capable devices in a geographic area defined by the alert originator. Delivery is not guaranteed; alerts may not reach devices that are off, out of coverage, or in use during the broadcast.
Managing alerts
Most devices let you turn off categories of alerts other than Presidential Alerts in your device's notification or accessibility settings.
No charge
There is no charge for WEA messages and they do not count against your data or text allowance.
WEA-capable devices
Not all devices support every category of WEA alert. Compatibility depends on the device model, operating system version, and software the manufacturer has implemented. Check your device's emergency alert settings or contact the manufacturer to confirm capabilities. Older devices may not support newer alert types such as enhanced geo-targeted alerts.
Geographic targeting
Modern WEA messages can be geo-targeted to areas as small as roughly the polygon defined by the alert originator. Devices outside the targeted area generally will not receive the alert, even if they are nearby. Targeting accuracy depends on device location services and current cell-site information.
Multilingual alerts
Where supported by the device and the alert originator, WEA messages may be delivered in English and Spanish, and (for some devices) in additional languages or via American Sign Language video. We do not control which languages a particular alert is published in.
Roaming and travel
WEA delivery while roaming on a partner domestic network typically continues to function, though some categories may not be available. International roaming networks generally do not deliver U.S. WEA messages; check the destination country's public alert system.
Accessibility considerations
WEA messages are accompanied by a unique attention signal and vibration cadence to assist customers who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or have low vision. Customers should ensure that WEA notifications are enabled in their device's accessibility settings.
Customer responsibilities
- Keep your device powered on and within wireless coverage to receive alerts.
- Update your device's operating system to the latest version to receive enhanced WEA features.
- Review and configure WEA categories in your device settings.
- Do not rely on WEA as your sole source of emergency information.
